Halley Hughes

Program Coordinator, Heat Resilience Initiative
Halley Hughes is the program coordinator for the Heat Resilience Initiative within the Arizona Institute for Resilience. The Heat Resilience Initiative addresses the global challenge of extreme heat through research, education, and engagement. The Initiative emphasizes a cross-disciplinary approach to addressing extreme heat, incorporating poMS Agricultural Educationlicy, governance, modeling, public health, and urban planning. In their role, Halley supports the Initiative’s active grants, creates and expands projects, as well as serves in community-facing roles to implement heat equity strategies in Southern Arizona. 
 
Halley is a third-generation Tucsonan, and their interest in climate and environmental justice stems from their love of the Sonoran Desert and the diverse communities in Tucson. She believes strongly in the power of empathy, diversity, and equity, and their ability to create impactful change and help navigate crises. Halley’s research has covered energy equity, home thermal modeling, hazard communication, community resilience, and political ecology. Halley serves on the Environmental Services Advisory Committee and the Heat Advisory Committee for the City of Tucson. When not at work, you can find them running their dogs on campus, cleaning up the Santa Cruz river, or in their community garden.
