The University of Arizona Arthritis Center Symposium is held each May in conjunction with National Arthritis Awareness Month. The conference - held on a Saturday - features the Eva M. Holtby Endowed Keynote Presentation, along with additional sessions designed for those living with arthritis and related musculoskeletal diseases.
The 2024 Annual Symposium will focus on cross-disciplinary research at the university and community partnerships that are building resilience against climate-induced health threats. Kacey Ernst, PhD, MPH, chair of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Department at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, will present a keynote entitled “Beyond the Forecast: The Interplay of Climate Change and Health.”
The symposium will also host a panel presentation including College of Medicine – Tucson faculty members: Associate Professor Fariba Donovan, MD, PhD, an infectious disease physician who specializes in diagnosis, treatment and research on coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever); Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine Brian Drummond, MD, FAAEM, co-founder and chair of the steering committee for the Arizona Health Professionals for Climate Action who teaches the senior elective on climate and health; Professor of Medicine Randy Horwitz, MD, PhD, who studies the impact of climate change on inflammation, inflammatory diseases and allergy-related conditions and Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine Julia B. Jernberg, MD, MS, who leads the AZ Climate and Health initiative and teaches the college’s climate and health section.
