This week on Arizona Illustrated our episode is dedicated to getting outdoors and enjoying the Spring weather in Southern Arizona. Take a hike and enjoy the sights, sounds and history of Tumamoc Hill or go birdwatching in Sweetwater Wetlands. We’ll show you how to create a habitat for birds in your own backyard and plant a local shrub with a fun name and flowers to match. Plus, Canoa Ranch is only 40 miles from Tucson but takes you back to Arizona’s historic roots.

Ode to Tumamoc Hill

An ode to the unique sites, sounds and people of Tumamoc Hill. The trail to the top of the hill has been used by humans for nearly 4,000 years, as this area is known to be the longest continually inhabited site in North America. This University of Arizona research station sees around 1,500 visitors a day. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Desert Laboratory on the hill is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Thanks to Ben Wilder, the Acting Director of the Desert Laboratory on Tumamoc Hill and all those who shared their stories with us.
